»There Is No Here, Here« is a music video performance that brings our digital existence to hyper-real levels. On stage we see a musician. He performs electronic music, works his machines like a hacker. We also see him on a huge screen. There, reality is different, and constantly changing. Behind the controls he directs his own screen life. We see him in films, in social media, in video games, in virtual realities, in street posters, in dating apps… What, who, where we see, soon becomes a blur. Where does he really exist? When is he really… he? There Is No Here, Here connects William Gibson’s bleak visions of lonely hackers battling digital reality in cyberspace, with todays increasingly screen-based life.
Gisle Martens Meyer is a Norwegian media artist. His work for stage, screen and new media often takes the shape of realtime music videos, and deals with issues surrounding new technology, social media and digital culture. Questions are raised in a surreal, quirky and playful aesthetic, where apparent naive escapism glides on the surface of serious, contemporary undercurrents.
